Diva Sharma, a Class XII Student from G.D.Goenka Vasant Kunj, is a teen activist, orator and innovative thinker.
She is an enthusiastic speaker for the cause of the representation of women in Science and Governance. She delivered a talk at the United Nations Association of US' Global Classrooms event held at United Nations Headquarters New York City on women and governance and received individual commendation for the same.
Her exposure to a natural environment has instilled in her a deep appreciation for animals. She learned how to turn her passion into action. To this end, she has developed a 'Novel Monitoring Mechanism to Detect Distress in Animals - Collar System'. The idea was conceived by her when she was 15 when she realised that there is no definite technological stress-detecting mechanism for animals. Her project has received recognition from the President of India for innovation and shortlisted for the Intel Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Confederation of Indian Industry. After developing her very own prototype, she was later assisted by Professors from the Indian Institute of Technology. She is also working with multinationals to turn her invention into a product that can cater to the needs of animals.
Diva was one of the first few who stepped in on hearing the sad news about the NGO Friendicoes SECA (Society for Eradication of Cruelty against Animals) which was on the verge of shutting down. She launched Campaign 'Project Petsafe' that involved the participation of school students to raise awareness to the needs of the street animals. She managed to raise over Rs.1 lakh for Friendicoes in 3 days and continued to raise funds incessantly. Today, Project Petsafe involves the participation of over 120 students from 7 Delhi-based schools.
Diva considers observation her biggest forte. She calls upon girls to take on the role of leaders and thinkers and join the vicious struggle in order to attain equality, starting in their very own classrooms. Deeply inspired by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, Diva believes in the power of women to Lean In their very own environments and strive for their education.
